BARBARA Lawson relived her younger days with a ride on a Harley Davidson bike as an 80th birthday treat.
Daughter Allison Hobson arranged the surprise for her mum when she came to her pub for a party and her usual Sunday lunch.
Barbara, of Millers Dale Court, Shirebrook Park, Glossop — who turned 80 yesterday (Wednesday) — was a regular biker with her late husband Alan.
Allison, landlady at the Brittania Inn on Manchester Road, Mossley, said: "Seeing a friend of ours Alan Frost, who used to be the landlord at the Church Inn in Top Mossley, riding his Harley Davidson she mentioned she had not been on the back of a bike for years. That got me thinking.
"Years ago we used to go on camping holidays with my dad with me in the sidecar. It was my dad’s main transport back in the ’50s. So I arranged for ‘Frostie’ to take her on a short ride. I’d written a poem beforehand saying she was going on a trip. Then this man walked in dressed in leathers — he looked like The Stig from Top Gear only he was dressed in black! She looked at him and said: ‘I’m not going in a helicopter!’ I wondered if she would go for it but she couldn‘t wait to get her jacket and helmet on. She loved it; the years came flooding back. It was a wonderful day."
Allison added: "She still drives a car and although she was never a rocker she used to ride on my dad’s Triumphs and BSAs in the ’50s. But she never got to go on a Harley Davidson."
