Police call for radio mast

17/ 9/2008

PLANNING chiefs are to decide whether to build a radio mast on a remote section of the Snake Pass where even the police cannot get a signal.

The blackspot, near the summit of the A57, means that in the event of an accident officers have to leave the scene to summon help.

Despite being turned down four times by the Peak Park Authority, it is hoped the revised design will be given the green light at a planning committee meeting tomorrow (Friday).

Airwave Solutions Ltd are the company behind the controversial mast which objectors say will be a blot on the landscape.

But police have hit back by saying the gap in communications could pose a serious threat. Speaking to the Advertiser earlier this year, Chief Supt Roger Flint said the police needed the mast.

"Having no communications up there causes all sorts of difficulties for the ambulance and for the police," he added. "If any sort of large plane came down we would need that capability."

Under new proposals the mast — on the edge of Coldharbour Moor, east of Glossop — would be attached to an existing road sign. Its power supply — a diesel-powered generator, diesel tank and radio equipment — would be hidden underground.

It has been recommended for approval as long as no complaints are received from Natural England or the Highways Authority and subject to a list of conditions relating to the impact of the mast on the surrounding environment.
