RAIN failed to dampen spirits at the Victorian Weekend.
Joyce Ashley, chairwoman of organiser GALA — Glossop Arts and Leisure Association — said: "We couldn’t control the weather but it was a great turnout, with about 2 to 3,000 over the two days with lots of people lining the high street.
"We even had a coach party from Europe, who said they had read about it on the website and wanted to visit for the day as they were in the Peak District."
She added: "And for a change, children in the best dressed Victorian costume competition received gold medals on multi-coloured ribbons whether they came first, second or third."
As usual Lady Hilton, whose late husband Sir Peter was Derbyshire Lord Lieutenant, crossed the county to pay a visit although she is now 89 and wheelchair-bound.
The weekend began with a 100th birthday party for new Glossop centenarian Hilda Hardcastle in Bradbury House, who was born a mere seven years after the Victorian era ended!
Mrs Ashley made a plea for more shopkeepers to help with organising the event. "The Victorian Weekend was started by traders 33 years ago but now we don’t have a single trader on our committee," she said.
