A GARDEN party is to be held for an Army charity by the parents of a teenage soldier who was killed a fortnight after arriving in Iraq.

Lynda Ledwith runs the Birds Nest Cottage B&B in Glossop with husband Leigh and is holding the second annual garden party there in aid of the Army Benevolent Fund next month. The fund supports serving and former soldiers and their families who are in need.

Her son, Kingsman Jamie Hancock , 19, was killed when he was hit while on sentry duty in a central Basra watchtower with the 2nd battalion of the Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment on 7 November, 2006, just two weeks after arriving in the country.

"We haven’t set any target but last year we raised about £2,500, the majority of which we raised on the day, although people can also make a donation on the www.justgiving.com  website," said Lynda.

Her other son, Joe, is a member of the 1st battalion of the Queen’s Lancashire Regiment. Jamie’s father Eddie is also due to attend the party, which has been arranged for Sunday, 14 September.

A performance by Glossop Old Band at 3pm will officially open proceedings, which will include a cake stall, bar, DJ, facepainting and a treasure hunt, as well as pizza supplied by Va Bene restaurant in Glossop.

Tickets, priced £5 (free for children under 12) can be bought from the Norfolk Street restaurant — which is also accepting cheques made payable to the Army Benevolent Fund. They are also available by e-mailing birdsnestcottage@btconnect.com  at the B&B.

The party is to take place between 2.30pm-7pm.
