Fun-filled 40th

A DOWNPOUR failed to dampen the spirits as Gamesley celebrated becoming middle-aged!
It’s 40 years since the first families moved onto what was the latest greenfield site to become a Manchester overspill estate with around 1,000 homes. Modern day residents did not let the landmark anniversary pass unnoticed on Saturday.
Mike Dewhurst, chairman of the residents’ association, said: "It went very well, considering the atrocious weather. One band who were to perform outside had to cancel because they had a lot of electrical equipment. But we had a really decent turnout despite the wet weather. Any money we raised — which isn’t a great deal after paying for bands etc — will go towards the bonfire night celebrations on 5 November on land behind the shops on Winster Mews."
Gamesley Councillor Anthony Mckeown added: "I’d say most of the estate turned out despite the weather. Gamesley primary school choir performed after Andy Crane did the official opening. The parade also went well, led by a very good pipe band. Here’s to the next 40 years!"
At the Winster Mews shops, folk enjoyed traditional stalls, including a coconut shy, as well as a barbecue and trampolines for the children. Local morris dancing troup The Valettes turned out, having also appeared at the 1960s’ fashion show at the Geoffrey Alan Centre the evening before.
And there was a health fair at the community centre, organised by centre staff, Groundwork Gamesley and the primary care trust’s health improvement team.
County Councillor Dave Wilcox said: "Forty years on there is much to celebrate about Gamesley. We have a nationally recognised excellence centre for the very young, a fast improving primary school and a unique healthy living centre and multi-games area.
"There is much to celebrate and much more to do, but the building blocks for an even bigger 50th celebration are firmly in place."
