Workers picket town hall in bid for big hike in pay

23/ 7/2008

LOCAL Unison members picketed Glossop’s municipal buildings during their two-day strike action.

The union, which counts cleaners, caretakers and binmen and other public sector workers among its membership, wants local authorities to return to the negotiating table to improve a 2.45 per cent pay offer. It is demanding a six per cent rise.

Charlie Carruth, Unison’s High Peak organiser, was part of the picket line outside the offices off Market Street on Thursday. The union had targeted Buxton the previous day as part of a nationwide campaign to re-start pay negotiations.

"We tried to persuade colleagues who wanted to work not to do so and a couple did," said Mr Carruth. "But non union workers went in. The days of pushing and shoving people are long gone. We just want the local authorities to come back to the table – an extra 50p an hour for our lowest paid members would make a big difference. If the real rate of inflation is four per cent – or higher – then an offer of 2.45 per cent is a pay cut in real terms. Pay awards don’t stoke inflation, the inflation is already there.

"Our national committee is to meet on 23 July to decide what action to take. But if the employers come back with another offer we’d be more than happy to call off any future action."
