Street kids rendezvous

TOWN bigwigs are going on a walkabout in Glossop to meet teenagers on the street.

The aim is to bridge the gap between teenagers and the rest of the community and reduce calls to police about anti-social behaviour.

A 10-strong group including teachers, shopkeepers, councillors and police is to take to the streets to find out from the horse’s mouth what youngsters would like to see provided for them in Glossop.

Sgt Barry Doyle, of Glossop Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: "The idea came to light at a safer neighbourhood meeting in June, when we were discussing the issues of groups of youngsters 'hanging about' in and around the town centre.

"Somebody came up with the idea to have a walkabout to speak with the kids and see what they want and how we can improve things for them. In doing so we will hopefully reduce the calls of anti-social behaviour. We have not done this before, other than a similar idea when we took teachers on patrol last year. I am not sure how exactly it will pan out and obviously a lot is dependent on the weather, as if it is raining there will not be too many kids out and about to talk to. But if it proves to be a success it is something we will look at developing in the future."

The group aims to include the market ground, Manor Park and the multi-use games area (MUGA) on Shirebrook Park on a two-hour tour around Glossop town centre tomorrow (Friday) which should finish around 10pm.

"Hopefully there will be plenty of kids out," Sgt Doyle added. "We can speak to them and try and find out how we can improve what is on offer for them and in turn reduce some of the fears people have. "It will also give those taking part in the tour an insight into the problems the police face."
