Beating the bullies

16/ 7/2008

AN OUTSTANDING anti-bullying scheme in a Glossop school has been rewarded.

Representatives from Simmondley Primary School attended the special ceremony at county hall to receive a certificate in recognition of the school’s achievement in the county council’s Anti-Bullying Commitment scheme.

Claire Grafton, headteacher at the Pennine Road school, said the school had to have certain programmes in place to qualify for the award.

"It’s about making sure that everyone is safe and happy and there is no bullying on the premises," she said. "Year six children are also trained as play leaders and organise activities for younger children, under a teaching assistant. They are also encouraged to become buddies, someone for younger children to talk too."

Councillor Anne Western, cabinet member for children’s services, presented pupils with certificates at the ceremony in Matlock. The scheme was set up in 1996 to encourage schools to introduce strategies to prevent and deal with bullying issues. Schools or children’s homes develop their own strategies based on the scheme.

Schemes vary from school to school, but examples include ensuring anti-bullying work is taught to all children; creation of quiet areas for pupils to escape from playground hustle and encouraging parents to communicate better with their children. Schools signing up to the scheme receive a pack providing them with a blueprint for anti-bullying initiatives.

Councillor Western said: "Bullying is an issue that can have a long-lasting impact on children’s lives and can lead to low self-esteem and truancy problems."
