Hundreds march to save Jonathan

16/ 7/2008

HUNDREDS marched through Glossop on Saturday to support an asylum seeker who is fighting to stay in the town.

Trainee teacher Jonathan Kazembe fled the Congo three years ago after being jailed and tortured for trying to stop the recruitment of child soldiers to fight in a civil war.

He was sleeping rough before being taken in by Jenny Thomas, a member of St Luke’s Church in Whitfield. But he now faces an uncertain future while the Home Office decides if he should be allowed to stay.

Jonathan, who does voluntary work in Glossop and visits schools to talk about his experiences, was joined by more than 200 people on what was thought to be the town’s first anti-deportation march.

The 29-year-old said: "We had young, old, every age group was represented, and I want to thank everybody who came. It’s wonderful to belong, to feel part of something. I knew some people but there were a great number who had read The Glossop Advertiser and wanted to make a difference. Everyone did and I am hoping that they will continue to support me until the end of the fight. It’s not easy, not knowing what will happen next, it’s very difficult living with the uncertainty, but when people support you it’s a great feeling."

Jonathan is collecting signatures to support his fight against deportation. To sign his petition visit www.glossopadvertiser.co.uk  or find copies in St Luke’s and St James’s in Whitfield.

You can also sign the petition in Glossop Wholefoods on Henry Street. For more information on Jonathan’s bid to stay in this country,
