WHAT is the secret to the perfect wedding?
A day without hitches and no worrying about where to seat warring relatives?
Why, invite only strangers to the big day, of course!
Catherine Webb, 41 and Mark Campbell, 47, of High Street West, Glossop married at the weekend at Barnstaple register office in Devon. As reported in The Advertiser last month, the couple wanted a no fuss wedding and had assumed they could ask passerbys to be witnesses on the day.
But on realising the register office needed to know the witnesses’ details in advance, they appealed in the North Devon Journal newspaper for witnesses which prompted more than 20 volunteers.
"It went really well," said Catherine."There were 17 of us all together. We ended up with a bridesmaid and page boy as well — they were really excited. Their mum contacted us to say the little girl had just kept saying she wanted to be a bridesmaid and she thought that was her big chance!"
One of the witnesses organised a reception at a pub in the nearby village of Westleigh and the local florist made up the bride and bridesmaid’s bouquet free of charge.
Mark, a telecoms engineer added: "It went better than expected. We were worried about everybody mingling but they were all chatting away to each other! Everybody came as strangers and left as friends."
