Demo to support asylum seeker

by Eve Dugdale
2/ 7/2008

GLOSSOP is preparing for what is thought to be its first anti-deportation march.

Residents young and old are being invited to the demo, which will raise awareness of African asylum seeker Jonathon Kazembe’s plight and highlight the reasons why many people come to Britain for help.

Trainee teacher Jonathon fled the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2005 after being jailed and tortured for trying to stop the recruitment of child soldiers to fight in a civil war.

He has been living in Glossop with parishioner Jenny Thomas since meeting her at an Action Against Poverty event.

Jonathon, 29, now does voluntary work in schools teaching French and educating pupils about life in Africa. Only this week he has been at Glossopdale Community College talking to pupils about genocide.

He said: "Quite a few people suggested doing this and people have been making placards. I don’t think there’s been anything like this before in Glossop, it’s the first of its kind. Everybody is welcome to come. It’s not just about letting me stay here, it’s also to raise awareness of what’s going on in other parts of the world – child soldiers and other issues. We’re going to walk from St Luke’s church to Norfolk Square and we’re thinking of making a circle of love – holding hands and doing a speech."

Meet at St Luke’s church on Fauvel Road at 11.30am on Saturday, 12 July.
