Village restores tribute to fallen

PROUD residents have clubbed together to raise £6,000 in just four months to restore a cenotaph to its former glory.

New flagstones are being laid and a flower bed, paid for by a charity grant, is set to be planted on the Old Road, Tintwistle site.

Last week residents received the shock news that their post office – the last shop in the village – is earmarked for closure.

Local builders and electricians are carrying out the work on the site for free and nearby businesses are throwing their weight behind the effort.

"It started off last September. The Parish Council asked would I clean the cenotaph up, so I got my jetwash and cleaned it up but I could only do it to a certain extent," said builder and resident Steve Ward. After that Geoff Beeson (from Beeson’s Waste Disposal in Hadfield) donated £500 for flags and I did the labour for free. A committee was set up which raised £6,000 – the people of Tintwistle all put their hands in their pockets to pay for the project. The flagging started on Monday and there’s going to be lights at the site and a Christmas tree will be planted so every year the band can play around it. We’re doing it out of respect for people who died. The last soldier to die from Tintwistle died in 1982 in Northern Ireland. Over there they have an organisation and they put in £2,500 towards the work. Cenotaphs all across the country are neglected but we wanted to spend money on ours and make it a centre point of the village."

Charity Action Earth provided money for the flowerbeds and residents will also be replacing the old benches.

John O’Grady, chairman of Tintwistle Cenotaph Memorial Association, said: "We’re very grateful to Action Earth for their support. The new flowerbed will be a mixture of existing plants, recovered from the site, and new plants provided by the grant."
