A RESPECTED former councillor and Labour stalwart has died aged 83.

John Francis died on Friday. A Gamesley councillor for the large part from 1976 until 2003, he was also deputy mayor in 1992–3 and mayor in 1993–4.

Councillor Anthony McKeown said: "John was a highly-respected and dedicated local councillor, as well as a well-liked neighbour, friend and family man who leaves behind his wife Norah and son John.

"I’m sure he will be hugely missed."

As well as serving on High Peak Council, Mr Francis was a school governor at a number of schools across the area including Gamesley Community Primary School, St Margaret’s, Glossopdale Community College and the Early Excellence Centre.

He was an active member of the Gamesley Residents Association, Gamesley Bowling Club and Neighbourhood Watch.

A book of remembrance has been set up in the GRA office on Winster Mews for anyone who wants to leave their own tribute to Mr Francis and any comments left on Councillor McKeown’s blog will also be passed on.

Details of the funeral have yet to be announced shortly.
