Milltown set for web fame

by Tom Rowley

A COUNCILLOR is setting up a website in a bid to preserve the ‘proper’ name of an area of Glossop town centre.

Milltown, off High Street East, has been a distinct part of the town centre for years.

But with the name also being adopted as the title of the new apartment block being created by B&R Developments out of Howard Town Mill off Victoria Street, Councillor Ivan Bell reckons it could be a recipe for chaos.

"Just imagine the confusion that will cause for postmen in future," said the Old Glossop Councillor."The council was crazy to agree to it."

Councillor Bell is asking folk to send him any old photographs of the area or stories about the people who to used to live there.

On his website, he says: "In Glossop there are six areas called town to the best of my knowledge.

These are: 1) Milltown, 2) Charles Town,3) Lean Town, 4) Free Town, 5) Rough Town, and 6) Howard Town."

He says that Howard Town Mill, now called Milltown by the developers was originally called The Commercial Mill.

Councillor Bell’s website – www.milltown-glossop.co.uk.  – boasts an interactive map, a detailed history of Milltown, incorporating toll bars and the money they collected, and an impressive collection of photographs of the area.
