When the saint goes marching in

30/ 4/2008

SCOUTS, cubs, guides and brownies gathered in honour of England’s patron saint at the weekend.

It may have been four days after the official St George’s Day, but that did not dampen the spirits of those who took part and the onlookers in Glossop town centre on Sunday.

Jack Hewitt, district commissioner for the scouts, said: "It went very well. Eight hundred scouts, cubs, guides and brownies attended.

"There were one or two drops of rain, but it was fine all the way around the parade and for the dismissal at the end."

So many attended that only the largest church in the area — St Mary’s RC Church on St Mary’s Road — was sufficient to accommodate the numbers attending the service, which was led by Monsignor Canon Jonathan Moore.

Because the Howard Town car park was closed, due to the redevelopment, the youngsters and other walkers had to assemble at St Philip Howard Sports College.

The Mayor of High Peak, Councillor Jean Wharmby took the salute in Norfolk Square while Glossop Old Band and Tintwistle Band provided the music.

Scout troupes attending were 2nd and 3rd Glossop; 1st Hadfield; 1st Tintwistle; 1st Dinting and 1st Longdendale plus Explorer scouts. Guide packs attending were: 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Glossop; 3rd and 4th Hadfield and 1st Hollingworth. Brownies who paraded were: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th Glossop; 1st, 2nd and 3rd Hadfield, 1st Tintwistle and 1st Hollingworth.
