New meter sparks outrage

A GLOSSOP woman sparked into action when she noticed a big jump in the number of electricity units she uses.
Joan Hanson, of Fitzallen Street, decided to switch to British Gas for her electricity as well as her gas and had a new meter installed in November.
But she was gobsmacked to see a 25 per cent rise in units consumed — from 1600 to 2100 — over the quarter to 25 March, and is now wondering if other folk in the same boat have been similarly affected.
She believes this works out at an extra £20 a month for her and her partner, who handles all the bills.
"It’s not as if we have kids with computers and TVs on in every room — we’ve only got two bedrooms and an attic," said Joan, 62. "Although we have had a new kitchen fitted with a tumble dryer and a dishwasher but they are not used excessively. I did expect a small rise but not as much as this. I couldn’t believe it.My next door neighbour had one fitted and he has found the same thing too. I was wondering if other people in Glossop with new meters have seen the units they have consumed gone up to such an extent?"
A spokesman for British Gas said: "We checked out the meter and are satisfied that everything is in order.
"The customer has asked us to contact her again in November to take another reading after the meter has been operating for a whole year."
