Keep footpath away from kids play area’

CHILDREN’S safety should come before walkers’ rights, according to one councillor.

Old Glossop’s Chris Webster is backing a proposal from South East Glossop Residents’ Association to divert footpath number 17 — which currently runs across a play area on Shirebrook Drive — around the multi-use games area.

Councillor Webster told Glossopdale police consultative group that the footpath was a former 1.5-mile long sheep trail which originates in Cross Cliffe, Whitfield and runs across Leicester Drive, Shirebrook Drive and as far as Derbyshire Level.

"I’m all for the heritage, but the safety of children has to come first and foremost," he said. "The proposed diversion would follow an existing public route. I don’t know why the footpath was not diverted when the houses were built in Shirebrook Park in 1983.It’s blocked up in places and has already been diverted several times — including when some houses were built in 1990 — and over the culvert on Shirebrook Drive. But there are always a lot of legal problems when it comes to diverting footpaths."

Councillor Webster added that as well as the residents’ association backing diversion, the local safer neighbourhood team was also in favour.

A High Peak Council spokesman said: "The council has published proposals to divert Footpath 17, which runs between Leicester Drive and Shirebrook Drive across the children's play area on Shirebrook Drive, Glossop. The council is currently considering the responses to those proposals.

"If any objections are sustained then the proposals will be referred to the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government for decision."
