Wheely good cause

23/ 4/2008

A GLOSSOP mechanic put the wheels in motion for a fund-raising challenge with a difference.

Rick Barlow, of St Marys Road, and pals Craig Hadfield from Hollingworth and Kevin Marshall from Bury, took part in the Scumball 3000 Rally.

The event, which took the chums on a chaotic drive in an old Ford Cortina across Europe, helped raise thousands for the Whizz-Kidz charity for disabled children.

Teams participated in vehicles worth under £500. Their chosen vehicle was transformed by students from Tameside College where Rick used to work as a mechanics teacher. And college pupils were part of his inspiration for the race.

"The charity was chosen by the organisation, but at college we had Dovestones pupils — who had severe learning difficulties — working with us, so I know about the charity."

Speaking before the race, Rick said: "We’ve got to get to Essex and then we don’t know where we’ll have to go from there. We’ll do about 750 miles-a-day. When you get to the towns you have to buy something from a shop. Your receipt is your proof that you were there."
