Joy as leaking lake is plugged

16/ 4/2008

GLOSSOP sailors are celebrating taking to the water again with a dragon race.

Glossop and District Sailing Club returns to its usual base now Torside reservoir is full again, after having to wait more than a year for leaks in its lining to be repaired.

The Dragon Open Pursuit Race will be the first open event of the sailing season on Sunday to be held by the club and has attracted some 16 competitors. It’s a welcome return for members who had to decamp to other watery inlets to pursue their favourite hobby when the reservoir off the Woodhead Pass sprung a leak.

United Utilities had to wait for the water to drain away before it carried out repairs. And once the hole was plugged, boat enthusiasts had to pray for rain so the reservoir was refilled.

Club bosun John Halton said: "They went to Combs in Chapel-en-le-Frith, Windsor Reservoir in the West Riding of Yorkshire and as far as Balla Lake in Wales and Rutland, near Lincolnshire. The reservoir has taken time to fill up again but now it has passed its MoT — so to speak — we are raring to go again."

In the past sailors from North America and Australia have taken part in the dragon race, which has also attracted competitors from Scotland and southern England.

The club is almost 40 years old and has around 140 members who sail all types of craft, including lasers, JBs, Javelins and all types of canoe.
