Nobel prize for eco professor

16/ 4/2008

A MODEST ecologist who as a child never thought he’d meet a professor let alone become one, has received one of the highest accolades known to man.

Professor Terry Callaghan, who has dined with the King of Sweden and spends his time travelling the world raising awareness of climate change, has received the Nobel Peace Prize for his services to mankind.

Prof Callaghan, of Woodseats Lane, Charlesworth, is director of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences’ Abisko scientific research station in the Arctic Circle and received his prize for his work with the Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change.

The panel shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize with former United States Vice President, Al Gore, for their research and efforts to educate people about man-made climate change.

"There are a lot of us who have worked extremely hard, many thousands of scientists who have contributed to the IPCC’s research from all over the world," he said.

The dad of three always knew he wanted to work outdoors but never anticipated such an exciting career.

"I come from a working class background, I went to a backstreet school – Chapel Street in Levenshulme. I was the first in our family to go to university. When my father bought this working cottage I started to work helping farmers. My dad knew I wanted to work outside so he said, ‘you can do it the easy way and become a solicitor and be outside for a hobby or do it the hard way and become a farmer’ so I decided to do it the hard way!"

After going to university and gaining his PhD, Prof Callaghan took a job in the Arctic Circle. At 62, Prof Callaghan, who has met the world’s government and religious leaders, has no plans to retire.

"Every week is different. Last Monday I flew from Manchester to Swedish Lapland to the research station I operate. I hosted a meeting of international experts of UVB radiation. On Thursday morning I drove through Northern Sweden and Finland into Northern Norway to a Lapi settlement to speak to reindeer herders and academics."

It's nice to see that this eco-warrior's concern for the planet doesn't stop him whizzing back and forth between Charlesworth & Northern Sweden. That's some commute. I hope he travels by balloon.

Should less emphasis be placed on the results of tests and more emphasis on general education for children?
