DRINKERS in Glossop pubs will have an extra reminder to behave themselves and to keep quiet when nipping outside for a smoke.

Derbyshire Police, in partnership with landlords in the town’s Pubwatch scheme, has had 10,000 beermats specially printed.

They come in two forms. One says ‘behave or be banned’ on one side, with the flip side warning that yobs face being barred not just from the pub where they cause trouble, but from all the pubs which are part of the scheme.

The other mat says ‘Gone for a smoke’ – smokers are supposed to leave them on top of their pint.

This tells bar staff not to clear away their pint while they are gone. It also carries advice to use the smoking bins provided outside, keep the noise down and not to forget that a discarded pint-pot can be weapon in the wrong hands.

Many have already been distributed to pubs, with the remainder to be dropped off over the next few weeks.

John Kennedy, chairman of Pubwatch, said: "There are 52 pubs in the scheme and the beermats are designed to dissuade troublemakers. They also warn people going outside for a smoke to keep the noise down.

"Last year when the smoking ban came in, there were 30–40 people stood outside some pubs in the good weather and there were complaints from neighbours. Now with most pubs having shelters, landlords should be more prepared and there should be less of a problem."

Mr Kennedy  who is landlord of the Crown Inn on Victoria Street, and Sergeant Barry Doyle, who has been involved with Pub Watch since the scheme was introduced three years ago, have been advocates for the beermats for the past year.
