Time to brush up on art skills

A GLOSSOP artist is urging fellow artists to sign up for a county-wide event next Spring.

Derbyshire Open Arts involves all manner of artists throwing open their studios and exhibition spaces to members of the public to visit over the Spring Bank holiday weekend next May.

Ceramics artist Adrian Holt said: “The Derbyshire Open Arts event has been going for three years and involves 100 artists from across the county but nobody from Glossop.

“This will be the first year I’ve taken part and I want other local artists to join in. The more that do that the more chance there is of putting Glossop on the map!

“Another Glossop artist, Jean Hobson, used to do a Glossop Arts Trail a few years ago — which was something similar — but that sort of fizzled out.

“A lot of artists live in Glossop but maybe don’t know each other. The Open Arts event is a chance for them to meet and enjoy each others work.

“It will also encourage visitors to come to Glossop and admire our brand new pavements (on High Street West) and the steps down from the railway station!”

Cambridge-born Adrian, 48, of Surrey Street, moved up to Glossop from London 10 years ago. Among his body of work are the ceramic murals at Wren Nest Mill, which were unveiled last Easter.

He has been professionally involved in ceramics for more than 15 years, exhibiting at art fairs and galleries across the country. His work also includes animal and figurative sculpture, masks, busts, pots and tiles and is influenced by natural history, the environment and cultural traditions from around the world.

There is just enough time for local artists to take part in the event — which will run from 24 to 26 May — as application forms are available on-line, but the closing date for entries is tomorrow (Friday).
