Tunnel demo 'victory'

Tom Rowley
16/ 1/2008

PROTESTORS seeking to save one of the country’s most famous railway tunnels hailed the big turnout at a demonstration at the weekend.

National Grid wants to lay electricity cables through the Woodhead Tunnel – last used by trains 27 years ago – but campaigners fear that will prevent it ever again being part of the railway network.

Well said Chris - the Longdendale Trail is the most popular path in the valley used by all ages for walking, cycling, running, horse riding or just strolling and enjoying the views which are spoilt by the power lines. We do not hear of the environmental lobby campaigning to get rid of these eyesores but they seem to want to destroy a well used footpath. Who wants high speed trains running through the valley when there are lines between Stockport and Sheffield and Stalybridge and Huddersfield that could be used?
