A golf safari in Anglesey

Simon Smedley
16/ 7/2008

IF the idea of a golf ‘safari’ appeals to any of you amateur hopefuls out there, then you won’t go far wrong with a stay at the beautiful Trearddur Bay Hotel on the picturesque island of Anglesey.

Thanks to our friends at the Treardurr Bay, my colleague and I were invited to try out the hotel’s terrific new experience - a relaxing stay with green fees for five of Anglesey’s best links courses all included in the price. We did only stay one night so only had enough time to fit in two rounds of golf, but if those experiences at Bull Bay Golf Club and Henllys Hall GC are anything to go by, then the courses at the Anglesey club, Baron Hill and Holyhead will surely not disappoint.

Bull Bay is an 18-hole par 70 heathland course, set amid rugged terrain, one mile west of Amlwch.

It’s hard work so you have to be reasonably fit [although buggies are, of course, available], but there are some particularly breath-taking scenic views of nearby Point Lynas Lighthouse, Snowdonia and even the Isle of Man as you work your way round.

The course at Henllys Hall the morning after was even better. An 18-hole par 72 course set in mature parkland near Beaumaris, Henllys Hall is a relatively new course which makes superb use of natural features, such as streams and ponds, and is testing for every level of player.

Unparalleled

Its elevated position affords players unparalleled views of the surrounding countryside and the mountains of Snowdonia, and really was a total pleasure to play.

Anglesey is an 18-hole par 70 links course set among dunes and heathland within an important wildlife conservation area, while Baron Hill might suit as a warm-up course at the beginning of your golfing break. It is a nine-hole par 34 moorland course at the south side of Beaumaris.

Free of bunkers, yet described as ‘challenging’, Baron Hill boasts perhaps the best par three hole on Anglesey (the fifth).

As for your base, the Trearddur Bay is located on a sandy bay on the glistening west shores of the picturesque Isle of Anglesey. It is one of North Wales’ premier hotel and hospitality destinations, and has recently been awarded Anglesey Tourist Association’s Hotel of the Year.

Give this break a try. Standard double or twin rooms start at just £76.25 per person, per night, but group bookings and societies are also welcome.

Ring the hotel on 01407 860301 or email: enquiries@trearddurbayhotel.co.uk
