Taking calf measures

1/ 7/2008

Q, I'M 25 and have decided, after years of thought, to do something about my legs. Both legs have no calf, at all.

From the age of 14, I never bought a dress, skirt or shorts. I dream of wearing a short skirt, high heels and just looking normal. My legs are totally out of proportion, the more I try to exercise, the larger my thighs get. Nothing I do can increase the definition of my lower legs. I know implants are available, what should I expect in terms of cost, recovery and discomfort.

A, Both men and women suffer with this problem. Men may want more bulk but women want sexy and shapely legs.

A calf implant is made of soft silicone with a smooth shell and is a slim oblong shape.

Most people imagine them to be the whole width of the calf when in fact it actually shapes the inner area; the aim being to give a defined appearance with a balanced contour.

Your expectations should be discussed in full with the surgeon. Be realistic, full contoured, balanced, shapely lower legs can be achieved. However, if you are seeking an athletic look there may be limitations on the space within the pocket. This is why implants come in various volumes and dimensions.

The procedure requires a general aesthetic. An incision of approximately two inches is made behind the back of the knee. Surgery takes approximately one to two hours and a one night stay in hospital is recommended. Swelling and bruising may be obvious for the first week. After that I always advise my patients to wear a small heel for a week or two as this really helps with flexibility. Discomfort is controlled with moderate medication and is usually only needed for the first few days. Try not to make the mistake of thinking you will be different from any other patient who has had such surgery.

Don't cut corners with the advice given regarding recovery and time off work. You should plan on taking at least one week, depending on your job and you should be able to return to full physical activities within four to six weeks.

The cost of this specialist surgery is around £5,000. Always check the surgeon who is consulting you.

Not all cosmetic surgeons do this procedure. Check their profile and qualifications.
