Art that aims to inspire
by Rachel Broady25/ 4/2005
YOUNG people are too often dismissed, be it as troublemakers or
as self-obsessed and not caring about the world around them and the
new Inspire/d exhibition shows this couldn't be further from the
truth.
The exhibition at Bankley Studios Gallery, Levenshulme exhibits a
diverse collection of work by second year Visual Arts students from
the University of Salford.
It incorporates a varied range of work including painting, drawing,
video, sculpture, photography and print and tackles the sort of
subjects many assume young people don't think about.
Swedish artist Joakim Agerwald uses video, sound and interactive
installations to examine the construction of the self in relation
to the patriarchal system while Cheryl Beswick's work is a
celebration of femininity and fragility.
Richard Smith examines the insecurities of young British men within
an urban, capitalist society in large steel wall reliefs and Astrom
Chang's drawings depict the urban landscape of Manchester,
examining inner city life and youth culture.
Molouk Farshchi's work explores organic and geometric patterns and
is based upon ideas drawn from Islamic design and Jean Ho's
figurative drawing and painting practice is inspired by film,
theatre and dance.
Photography and collage make up Jennie Keegan's work, using
advertising and the media as inspiration, creating an image
reflecting our times while Mikael Nilsson is Inspired by Art Deco
of the 1920s.
Deborah Pollard creates mixed media sculpture, focusing upon the
obsessive lengths individuals will go to, including self-abuse and
mutilation, to conform to social pressures.
Paul Rooney's videos are created by adulterating film stock, and
exploring the potential to communicate emotion.
Exhibition opens at Bankley Studios Gallery, Bankley
Street, Levenshulme, on Saturday April 30 and runs until May 1.
Opening hours noon - 4pm.
