BALLET: Stravinsky: The Real Deal/Giselle, Lowry, from Tues 8 July

AFTER an absence of almost five years, the full-length ballet Giselle returns to Birmingham Royal Ballet’s repertoire and The Lowry stage.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, Stravinsky: The Real Deal celebrates the composer’s music in a triple bill featuring Petrushka, Card Game and the recently premiered Le Baiser de la fée by choreographer Michael Corder.

Petrushka reveals all the wild fun of the Butter Week Fair in St Petersburg. In Card Game, Stravinsky – himself a keen poker player – focuses on allegiances, rivalries and power.

And in Le Baiser de la fée, new life is breathed into Hans Christian Andersen’s chilling fairytale, The Ice Maiden. Then from Thursday to Saturday, it’s David Bintley and Galina Samsova’s production of Giselle, the tragic tale of love and betrayal as lovestruck Giselle has no idea her beloved peasant suitor, Loys, is really Count Albrecht in disguise.

The pastoral, joyous setting of the first act is replaced in the second with the sinister atmosphere that surrounds the ghostly wilis – women betrayed by their beloved before their wedding day.
