Life in the workhouse

3/ 1/2007

WORKHOUSES were a common feature of 19th century life.

The 1834 Poor Law Amendment Act compelled parishes across England to abolish traditional forms of welfare relief afforded by the able-bodied unemployed and build institutions where they could be put to work.

The Ladies' Workhouse in Shire Hill, Glossop, is thought to have been built in 1840 and extended in 1895.

Part of a larger complex erected in 1832-34 - just before the passing of the Act - it later became known as Glossop Public Assistance Institution and then, under the National Health Service, as Shire Hill Hospital. This group photograph of the occupants is thought to date from about 1880.
