Rush to be part of tradition

20/12/2006

THE Rush Bearing ceremony was traditionally part of the Well Dressing celebrations held in Whithead, Glossop.

The custom is said to be several hundred years old. In the days when churches' floors consisted of little more than earth, parishioners brought rushes in to the building to 'purify' the air and help insulate worshippers from the cold.

In modern rush-bearing ceremonies, wild rushes and flowers are paraded around the village in procession. This photograph was taken at Whitfield Cross, Whitfield, in or around 1920.
