Brave and efficient men

THIS week's picture shows Glossop fire brigade posing at Hadfield Railway Station.

In the 19th and early 20th century, volunteer or 'gentlemen' fire brigades were quite common and it was considered a great honour to be a member. Although made up of amateurs, the brigades were often well equipped and highly efficient.

The councillors standing in the front row are, from left: Mr Cooper (policeman), Mr Greaves (baker), Mr Marten (draper) Mr Braddock (grocer), Mr Thornley (mill manager) Mr Dawson (decorator) , Mr Israel Warrington (mill over-looker). The date on which it was taken is unknown.
