2/11/2006

THIS week's picture shows the Cotton Queen celebrations on Edward Street, Glossop, and was taken on 27 September, 1930.

According to history website www.spinningtheweb.org.uk, a national Cotton Queen competition was started in 1930 to promote in the cotton industry.

This annual three-week event was held in Blackpool and the winner would then spend a year travelling around the country promoting cotton to businesses and the public.

The first winner was a woman from Glossop named Frances Lockett who worked at a mill in Hyde. She was 19 when she won the Cotton Crown.
