Armistice Day celebrations

16/ 1/2008

THIS week's picture is of the celebrations in Norfolk Square, Glossop following the First World War Armistice.

The armistice that ended World War 1 was formally signed in Foch’s railway carriage at 11 o’clock 11 November 1918. The armistice initially ran for 30 days but was regularly renewed until the formal peace treaty was signed at Versailles the following year. This is why many celebrations were held in 1919.
